Free Online Burnout Test — Am I Burnt Out?
A proper burnout test does more than ask if you feel tired. It checks the four things clinicians actually look at: exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive strain and emotional strain — the pillars of the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) developed at KU Leuven.
This free online burnout test takes about two minutes. You'll get a score, a likely stage, and specific next steps based on where you land — not a generic "you might be stressed" result.
Signs this quiz picks up
Tired in a way sleep no longer fixes
You sleep, sometimes for a long time, and wake up already depleted. This kind of exhaustion is the single most reliable early sign of burnout.
Emotional distance from things you used to care about
Work, hobbies, people — everything feels further away. Not dislike; more like the volume has been turned down. Mental distance is one of the four BAT pillars.
Cognitive strain — forgetting words, losing your train of thought
Not a memory problem, a bandwidth problem. When the nervous system is chronically over-drawn, working memory is one of the first things to go.
Short fuse or emotional flatness
Either small things provoke a bigger reaction than they warrant, or you feel very little at all. Both are emotional-strain signals in the BAT.
Physical symptoms with no clear cause
Tension headaches, gut issues, tight chest, dizziness, frequent minor illness. These often show up before people accept what's really going on.
Frequently asked
Is this online burnout test clinically validated?+
It's based on the Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT), a validated instrument developed by researchers at KU Leuven and used across Europe. It's designed for self-check — it isn't a diagnosis, but it gives a reliable indication of where you sit and whether it's worth speaking to a GP or therapist.
How long does the burnout test take?+
About two minutes. There are no trick questions and no sign-up required to see your result.
What's the difference between burnout and stress?+
Stress is acute and usually lifts when the pressure lifts. Burnout is what happens when the demands chronically outpace the recovery — you become depleted, cynical and cognitively foggy in a way that doesn't reset after a weekend off. That's why a proper burnout test looks at pattern and duration, not just intensity.
Can I be burnt out even if I'm still functioning?+
Yes — high-functioning burnout is one of the most under-recognised presentations. The output looks fine from the outside while the inside is running on fumes. It's exactly why a validated test is worth taking rather than waiting until you can't cope.
What should I do if I score high risk?+
Please book a GP appointment this week and, if you can, speak to a therapist. High-risk burnout responds well to support but rarely improves on its own. Your result page will include the specific next steps for your score.
