Free Caregiver Burnout Quiz — Am I Burnt Out From Caring?

Caregiver burnout is a specific kind of depletion: it doesn't switch off at the end of a shift, it rarely gets acknowledged, and it often comes wrapped in guilt for even noticing it. Whether you're caring for an ageing parent, a partner with a long-term condition, a disabled child, or a relative recovering from illness, the load accumulates in ways that a general burnout quiz can miss.

This free 2-minute quiz uses the clinical Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) to score you across exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive strain and emotional strain — framed for the reality of long-term caregiving.

    Signs this quiz picks up

    • Compassion fatigue — the care is there, the feeling isn't

You still do everything you did before, maybe more, but the warmth behind it has thinned out. This is one of the most painful and least-talked-about signs.

    • Resentment that surprises and shames you

Flashes of anger or resentment towards the person you're caring for, followed by guilt. These are load signals, not character flaws.

    • Physical exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix

Even on a night when you get a proper stretch of sleep, you wake up already tired. Chronic caregiving burns through recovery capacity faster than sleep can rebuild it.

    • Losing yourself outside the caring role

Hobbies, friendships, and the version of you that existed before the caring role have gone quiet. Mental distance shows up here as much as it does in workplace burnout.

    • Small decisions feel impossible

What to cook, whether to reply to a message, whether to book that appointment. Decision fatigue is a cognitive-strain sign, and it's common in carers holding dozens of daily micro-choices.

    Frequently asked

    What is caregiver burnout?+

Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion caused by the sustained load of caring for another person. It shares the same underlying pattern as any burnout — exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive strain, emotional strain — but the trigger is caregiving demand rather than job demand.

Is compassion fatigue the same as caregiver burnout?+

They overlap. Compassion fatigue is specifically the emotional-distance component — feeling numbed or checked out from the person you're caring for. Caregiver burnout is the broader picture including physical exhaustion and cognitive strain.

I feel guilty even taking this quiz. Is that normal?+

Very. Most carers describe feeling guilty for noticing their own depletion, as if it takes something away from the person being cared for. It doesn't. Looking after your own capacity is what makes sustained caregiving possible.

What should I do if I score high risk?+

Please speak to your GP this week — carer burnout is medically recognised and there are local carer-support services that can help with respite. If you can access therapy, this is exactly the situation it's for.

How is this different from the general burnout test?+

Same clinical engine, different framing. The questions are the validated BAT items; the signs, examples, and guidance around them are written for the reality of caregiving rather than employment.
